The Going with the STREAM elementary curriculum incorporates story-driven challenges to teach STEM concepts and skills. Each challenge, inspired by a different book, ranges from engineering design and architecture to electronics and mechatronics, encouraging hands-on learning with real-world applications. Students meet STEM characters who inspire lesson challenges, strengthening literacy while practicing creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. Along the way, learners gain awareness of STEM careers and develop future-ready skills to connect classroom learning with the world of work.

Much of the literature used in these lessons can be found in school libraries, and books are also available for purchase through our Amazon affiliate links. Lessons are flexible and can be used as written or easily modified to meet the needs of different classrooms and students.

Guide students through the engineering design process and engage them in a design challenge involving paper folding and a paper circuit activity.

Create a festive parade where each float is pulled by a basic coded robot. Students can design and construct their own parade floats using a variety of materials.

Create interactive talking posters about various jobs. Research a local professional who works in the field featured on your poster and write them a letter to learn more.

Design posters that remind others to care for supplies. Students imagine what tools would say, then use stories, drawings, and discussion to inspire respect.

Build interactive, hands-on games with technology and student-created pieces. Students blend circuits and design to bring their games to life.

Design and build a model car from electronics and cardboard, allowing students to explore basic mechanical concepts while constructing a functional model.

Build a fitness tracker by assembling sensors and circuits, and code it to monitor health metrics. Students test it out in real activities to see how well it works.

Engage in activities that mix writing, drawing, and coding. Students create their own poems, design interactive art, and use technology to bring their ideas to life.

Design a tiny house with CAD or construct a model from paper, focusing on learning and applying SMART Green efficiency techniques that can be implemented in a home.

Design and build sea-creature robots using creativity, science, and biomimicry. Students use coding to imagine how their robots could explore the ocean’s depths.

What is STREAM?
