Rapid Innovation Challenges™

Navy Scientists and Engineers challenge students to design, prototype, and pitch solutions to problems they face in their quest to drive innovation in a wide range of emerging fields, such as AI/machine learning, coastal change, cybersecurity, and medical response innovation.

Students (Secondary and Higher Ed) work in virtual or in-person teams, guided by design-thinking, prototyping, and iterative design scaffolds and prompts on the Scoutlier digital platform, which they can access on individual or shared devices (Chromebooks, laptops, tablets, mobile phones). Their work is visible in real-time to educators for coaching, and teams can request input and feedback from a rich mentor network. Solutions are shared with and recognized by Navy STEM career role models and the Rapid Innovation community. On-demand and virtual professional development and certification for teachers are available for this program.

Engineering, Design, and Coding

FIRST_Vertical_RGB.png

Based on content from FIRST

Students build foundational engineering, design and coding skills that are essential for Robotics and other emerging fields and career-paths.

In this collection of short lessons designed by FIRST, the global robotics community that prepares our youth for the future, students (grades 2 – 12) tackle engaging challenges that build their STEM skills, creativity, problem solving and confidence. The Scoutlier tool serves as a platform to make it easier and more effective to work with this curriculum. Using the tool, students can tackle the lessons independently or collaboratively, in the classroom, at home or as part of an after-school program. They can capture, document and share what they have learned in many ways; pictures, video, data tables, text and more. Teachers and parents can track progress in real-time, modify lessons on the fly, and differentiate to better meet the needs of all learning styles and abilities. The tool is compatible on all devices and Scoutlier is available to offer help, training and professional development to educators, coaches and parents.

A (Virtual) Bridge to Success

scoutlier-a-bridge-to-success-logo-rgb.png

Students with moderate to severe learning disabilities build critical academic, vocational and life skills in the classroom, at home, and in the community, through engaging, structured activities they can access on any device.

A Bridge to Success is a rapidly growing, research-validated library of learning activities for special education programs designed to achieve essential learning outcomes and greater student independence in any learning environment. Students access activities on any device, including Chromebooks, tablets, and phones. Each Virtual Bridge activity consists of a set of tasks, and defines the steps to complete each one and the multimodal work products (e.g. text, audio, video) they create at each step. Optionally, students can view the work products that their classmates have created, and access multimodal instructional resources that provide background and guide them to complete tasks. Teachers select activities that align with their student’s needs, modify them if necessary, and assign them through their LMS or by providing an access code. They can track their students’ progress in real-time, review, and grade completed work, and create and download student work products and portfolios. On-demand and virtual professional development and certification are available for this program.

Ready for the New Normal

Social and Emotional Learning

4point0.png

Funded by 4pt0 Schools

Students and teachers explore important and urgent socio-emotional topics, concerns and strategies, and prepare for an uncertain school year, through safe and productive conversations and learning. They express themselves through work products that can be kept between them and their teacher or shared more broadly with their peers if desired and valuable.

Students (grades 5 and up) complete short (25-minute) lessons delivered through the Scoutlier digital platform in the classroom or virtually on individual or shared devices (Chromebooks, laptops, tablets, mobile phones) on topics ranging from Anger and Anxiety to Self Image and Advertising to Goal Setting and Team Building. Lessons are followed by in person or web-based classroom or one-on-one discussions reviewing work products and exploring ideas and concerns. On demand and virtual professional development and certification for teachers is available for this program.

Colossal Collisions

Integrated Science

In collaboration with SCALE

Students role-play as teams of scientists, designing a way to save the Earth from an imminent collision with an asteroid. Leveraging their newfound subject matter knowledge in the physical sciences and engineering, they announce their solution to the world.

In this unit from Stanford University’s NGSS-aligned SCALE curriculum, students (grades 8 and up) build their mastery of subject matter in physics and geoscience and explore essential STEM skills such as hypothesis development and engineering design process. Students work individually and in teams as they investigate and build their knowledge base. As a capstone assignment, students work in the classroom or virtual teams and apply their new knowledge to design and test solutions to prevent the collision. Finally, they develop and share a news story that explains how they have saved the world from certain destruction. The curriculum is delivered in the classroom or virtually on Scoutlier’s digital platform using individual or shared devices (Chromebooks, laptops, tablets, or mobile phones). On-demand and virtual professional development and certification for teachers are available for this program.

Learning: Everywhere

Hands-on Design Thinking and Problem Solving

Provided in partnerships with Eduporium

The Eduporium and Aecern (Scoutlier) teams have introduced an initial 1:1 MakerEd ‘Learning: Everywhere’ kit that embodies a hybrid approach to STEAM learning in the new normal by unifying the “heads, hearts, and hands” of students with beneficial EdTech tools. The kit supports and enhances lessons in design thinking and problem solving with cross-disciplinary STEAM and SEL as well as a wide range of differentiated learning experiences supported by the Scoutlier digital learning tool. The perfect solution for independent students as well as collaborative groups, the ‘Learning: Everywhere’ kit helps add flexibility to all back-to-school and home learning scenarios.

Junior Researchers

Citizen Science

Students become essential partners through scientific exploration in areas that are deeply meaningful to them and globally relevant. Led by researchers from the Naval Postgraduate School, the University of Georgia and Raytheon, they capture, analyze, and share data that is vital to the progress of active research programs.

Students (grades 8 and up) prepare and participate in field-based research and lab experiments in CA, MA, and RI. Guided by data protocols on the Scoutlier digital platform and coached by researchers, they collect, share and analyze data that contributes to the understanding of coastal change, natural resource management, and coastal security, by advancing our understanding of underlying physical processes, testing of new technologies, and supporting the training of deep neural networks that improve machine learning and automation necessary to innovate in these fields.
